In September of last year, as my nephew’s birthday was approaching I started to brainstorm gift ideas that didn’t include toys. A little backstory on Conrad, he is fascinated with animals – especially dogs. Naturally, I wanted to create something that shared our common love for dogs and that is when I had this idea for a counting book. I knew photographing the smaller groups would be “easy”, but had no idea how the larger groups of dogs would be. However, I love a challenge and set out to find models for the ten different breeds featured: St. Bernard, Beagle, Pit Bull, Pomeranian, Corgi, Poi Dog, Dachshund, French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, and Shiba Inu.
This was a big project that was made possible with the help of the many dogs involved and their families. All together I’ve photographed 59 different dogs around Oahu for this book. At times it was a little crazy – but in the best way possible. There were lots of fun props, drool, treats, and peanut butter involved! Here are a few behind the scenes photos from our shoots:
Over the next few months, there was a growing interest for this book to be published on a larger scale. So I was very excited that what started off as just a Birthday/Christmas present has now become another way for me to share my passion for pet photography with a bigger audience! I’m very proud of this book and poured my heart into every page. Its a book for kids to teach them how to count from 1 to 10, but it is also a book for anyone who would like a small reminder of how much joy and love dogs bring in to our lives.
A few weeks ago I was in Volcano for the holidays and finally got to deliver the first copy of 123: Dogs in Hawaii to my nephew! It truly is a special present that we both can enjoy together. Every morning Conrad would pull this book off the shelf and bring it to me to read. I’m not surprised we both have the same favorite page – a yearbook style collage of all the dogs!
Pre-sales are now available via Kickstarter until January 25th and every pledge helps brings this dream one step closer to reality!
